A post mortem was carried out on Saturday on the baby found in a graveyard in Portarlington, Co Laois.
The 16 year old mother came forward over the weekend after the new born baby was found in a Church of Ireland graveyard on Friday.
A spokesman for the Garda Press Office confirmed the teenage girl had undergone an extensive medical examination. He said that the Garda was treating the case in a "sensitive way".
The baby's body was found wrapped in a plastic bag in Rathmiles cemetery by a local man at midday on Friday. It is understood the body was decomposed but the Garda spokesman would not speculate on a time of death. He said the results of the post mortem from the state pathologist, Dr John Harbison, were being awaited.
