A MAN arrested after he tried to use a taxi as a getaway vehicle following a post office robbery will appear in court this morning.
The incident occurred in Rathmines, Dublin, yesterday afternoon. A man in his 30s walked into the post office on Upper Rathmines Road at about 1.30pm. He tried to conceal his identity by wearing a cap and sunglasses.
He threatened staff with what appeared to be a gun before escaping with a sum of money, ran out of the post office and got into a taxi at a rank across the road.
As he was trying to threaten the driver into taking him from the scene, several Garda cars arrived in the area.
A number of armed gardaí saw the raider in the taxi and then arrested him at gunpoint.
The suspect was detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and was taken to Rathmines Garda station for questioning.
He was still being held there last night.
All of the money stolen from the post office raid was recovered by gardaí as the suspect was being arrested.
