Pope opens largest-ever college of cardinals

Pope John Paul II

Pope John Paul II has opened a rare special session of the so-called Sacred College of Cardinals, bringing together more than 180 cardinals to discuss the Roman Catholic Church's role in the third millennium.

The ailing pope, 81, welcomed the cardinals to the meeting, which will last until Thursday.

It is the sixth time since the start of his pontificate that John Paul has called an extraordinary session of the college of cardinals.
