showed that the revelations thrown up by the Hutton Inquiry have damaged the Prime Minister, with 43 per cent of voters believing he should quit, compared with 37 per cent before the hearing opened.
A total of 42 per cent believed he should stay in office while 15 per cent were not sure.
Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon has also suffered as a result of the inquiry into the scientist's presumed suicide, with 62 per cent calling for his resignation and only 14 per cent wanting him to stay.
Significantly, while Labour voters rallied round Mr Blair in the poll, 41 per cent of the party's supporters wanted Mr Hoon to resign, with only 30 per cent believing he should stay.
Forty-nine percent nevertheless thought the US and Britain were right to go to war in Iraq, but crucially 41 per cent believed Saddam Hussein did not possess weapons of mass destruction when military action began, compared with 37 per cent who thought he did.
