Police in Derry are today hunting an attacker who raped a woman on a pathway beside the River Foyle.
Detectives appealed for help from the public - especially a man who walked past while the rape was taking place.
The attacker approached and assaulted the woman close to a pub at Rock Terrace in the Strand Road area of the city sometime between 3.00am and 3.30am today.
The man then forced the woman along Baronet Street to the riverside pathway where he sexually assaulted her, said a police spokesman. The woman eventually managed to break free from her attacker and ran to a nearby taxi office where she raised the alarm.
Detectives said her attacker was described as being in his mid-twenties, wearing a while baseball cap bearing a logo.
They appealed for anyone in the area at the time or anyone who could help identify the rapist to come forward.
Police believe the man who walked past may not have realised what was happening and thought that it was a couple having a row.
Detectives will be investigating whether they is any connection between the latest attack and a number of rapes in Derry in the past months.
