A friend of England international Jonathan Woodgate told a court today that he was not the man who bit a student badly injured in a city centre attack.
Former junior boxing champion Paul Clifford said he stood at the top of the road as up to 16 young men fought in the street.
The prosecution alleges that Clifford, Woodgate and Leeds United team mate Lee Bowyer were involved in the attack that put university student Sarfraz Najeib in hospital for eight days, with a broken leg and broken nose and cheekbone.
One of the attackers, alleged to be Clifford, was seen to bend over the injured victim and bite him on the face.
Clifford, a student, told Hull Crown Court: "I would not bite anyone, I am not an animal."
The prosecution say Clifford was among a group of men who chased Sarfraz, now 20, and his friends from a Leeds night club and kicked and punched him.
Woodgate and Bowyer, it has been alleged, joined in the attack and one witness said Woodgate had jumped on the defenceless victim with both feet.
Woodgate, Bowyer, Clifford and another man, Neale Caveney, deny causing grievous bodily harm and affray on January 12th last year.
