GARDAÍ IN Cork are investigating the discovery of a pipe bomb outside a house in a north city neighbourhood yesterday.
Residents of Popham’s Road, Farranree, were evacuated from their homes following the discovery of the device in the front garden of a house shortly after 10am.
The device is understood to have been placed in a plastic bag in the back seat of a private car parked outside the house. It is understood the back window of the car had been smashed.
An Army bomb disposal team called out to deal with the device arrived at the scene at 11.45am, while up to 80 local residents waited a short distance from the cordoned off area.
The device was removed to a safe location for technical examination by the Army Bomb Disposal Unit. The device was fully viable, according to an Army spokesman, who said it had all the components to detonate and cause damage.
The remains of the device were handed over to gardaí to aid their investigations after the device was made safe. The scene was declared safe at 1.30pm and residents were permitted to re-enter their homes.
The incident marks the 53rd call out for the Army Bomb Disposal Unit so far this year.
