French midfielder Emmanuel Petit may quit international football after next summer's World Cup finals.

The 31-year-old Chelsea player would join defender Frank Leboeuf in hanging up his Les Bleus boots following the tournament in Japan and Korea.

Petit, who scored the last goal in his country's 1998 World Cup final triumph over Brazil, told television channel France 3: "No one really knows it, but the possibility of retiring after the World Cup has crossed my mind and still does.

"This has nothing to do with a physical problem. I consider that I am still physically very good and I think I can still serve the French team well".
