GALWAY Corporation has confirmed that it has sought planning permission to expand the city dump significantly, but denied that it was part of a move to provide a super dump for the city and county.
Already, four organisations have indicated their opposition to the plan, submitted to Galway County Council. They represent fishery interests, environmentalists and residents of the Carrowbrowne area on the outskirts of the city.
It is proposed to increase the height of the landfill site from 12 to 29 metres.
A representative of Castlegar Concerned Community, a residents' group, said that in their view, the plan to "vertically extend" the 47-acre dump was contrary to the judgment in a High Court action taken by them. The judgment, they believe, should have forced the local authority to close the dump within six months.
The city manager, Mr Joe Gavin, said, however, that thy aim was "to improve the environmental situation at Carrowbrowne".
