Fans of The Archers finally heard the sad news they had feared for two months last night - that Tom Forrest, the last character from the programme's "old guard", had died.

Bob Arnold, who played Forrest for 46 years, died in August this year. He joined the series a few months after its first episode in 1951.

Forrest's nephew Phil Archer, played by Norman Painting, broke the news on last night's edition that Tom (88) died peacefully at the Laurels Nursing Home.

Forrest had not been heard in the show since last Christmas when he joined in celebrations with a song at The Bull pub.
