Paul McCartney has won a major US award for his work to popularise classical music. The former Beatle was given the New Horizon Award, run by National Public Radio, for his symphonic poem, Standing Stone.

The 75-minute piece has sold more than 250,000 copies worldwide and spent 11 weeks at number one in the US's Billboard classical chart last year.

Makers of Titanic yesterday apologised to a Scottish village for their portrayal of its most famous son as a cowardly murderer. The executive vice-president of 20th Century Fox, Scott Neeson, travelled to Dalbeattie after the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic - which was lost on April 14th, 1912 - to make amends to descendants of first officer William Murdoch and locals who have long regarded him as a hero.

In the film Murdoch, who was in charge of the liner's lifeboats, shoots two people and tries to ensure first class passengers' survival above others before shooting himself in shame. In reality, Murdoch was credited with saving several hundred lives. The first officer later drowned when the liner went down.
