Shortly before Christmas, I mentioned as a useful (and admittedly whacky) present the splendid vegetable peelers made by the firm Rosle. I bought one months ago, in order to try to make my life easier given that I have a three-year-old who needs a daily fix of mash, and I found the peeler knocked anything else for six, mainly because it has a proper blade.

Fine, said a number of people, but why didn't you tell us where we can buy them. Well, the Rosle range of kitchen implements can be bought in good kitchen shops such as Dublin's Kitchen Complements, on Chatham Street, but they are also available through department stores such as Brown Thomas in Dublin and Cork, Meadows & Byrne in Cork, Todds in Limerick, Options in Galway, Starlighting in Monaghan and The House of James in Naas. If you have any trouble getting hold of one, the importer is Seamus McCarthy Kitchenware of Nenagh, Co Tipperary, tel: (067) 33883. They are, I guess, relatively pricey, and some folk might balk at paying around £20 for a spud peeler, but they do work brilliantly, and the blades can be replaced, which means they last a lifetime.
