Pakistani police said today the fate of kidnapped US reporter Mr Daniel Pearl remained unclear, despite the arrest of the chief suspect in the case.

"Unless we discover firm evidence about what has happened to Daniel, I would say it is unclear (if he is still alive)," said police chief for the province of Sindh, Mr Syed Kamal Shah.
Police yesterday said their prime suspect, British-born Islamic militant Mr Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, had told them Mr Pearl was still alive, three weeks after he disappeared in the southern port city of Karachi.
But Mr Shah said Mr Omar could have been misleading his interrogators.
