The organisers of a fundraising function for "Real IRA" prisoners last night said they understood the event was going ahead, despite a newspaper report that it had been cancelled.

The Irish Republican Prisoners' Welfare Association is due to hold the function in Brennan's Bar in west Belfast on Friday night.

The main speaker is the New York lawyer and former Noraid publicity director, Mr Martin Galvin.

Mr Galvin, once a close associate of Mr Gerry Adams and Mr Martin McGuinness, fell out with the Sinn Fein leadership over the peace process. He is now involved with the 32 County Sovereignty Movement.

There are about 30 "Real IRA" prisoners in the North, the Republic and England. Relatives of those killed in the Omagh bomb had threatened to picket the function.

They said it was "horrific" that the event was being held only three days after the second anniversary of the explosion in which 29 people died.

A function for "Real IRA" prisoners was held in Brennan's Bar in June.

Yesterday's Irish News quoted the owners of the bar as saying that it was a "family-run" pub and they knew nothing of the nature of Friday night's function when it was booked.

They said they had since contacted the organisers to "express concern". The owners could not be contacted for comment yesterday.

According to the Irish News report, the Irish Republican Prisoners' Welfare Association has cancelled the event.

Mr Rory Dougan, of the association, said last night that as far as he was aware the event was going ahead and the group had not been informed otherwise.

He denied that the premises had been booked under false pretences.
