The Orange Order has thrown away "its last shred of respectability" by blaming the PSNI for recent loyalist violence, the SDLP said today.

The party's deputy leader Dr Alasdair McDonnell said the Order's new message was "simple but chilling: Let us have our way or we will burn the city."

Speaking after the Order held a press conference in Belfast saying it was blameless over three nights of loyalist rioting following a controversial parade, Dr McDonnell said: "This is no different from the blackmail of the paramilitaries.

"This open violent confrontation with the police must have consequences for future parades determinations.

"I believe serious consideration must be given to the banning of any parade or protest where the organisers will not accept that by bringing people out on to the streets they are fully responsible for the consequences.

"A statement of support of law and order and compliance with police and Parades Commission instructions must become a condition of all parades and protests."
