Security was low-key in Portadown town centre on Saturday as an Orange parade in support of the Drumcree protest passed off without incident.

The parade differed from previous Drumcree marches organised by Portadown Orange district. Instead of following the normal route to the church, the Orangemen made their way through the town centre to Park Road, a Protestant enclave at the lower end of Garvaghy Road.

Here the RUC, assisted by troops, had blocked the route leading to the nationalist estates.

The number of Orangemen taking part was well down on that of previous parades in Portadown. Approximately 300 Orangemen, accompanied by several bands, participated.

At Park Road the marchers were addressed by several speakers, including Assembly member Mr Paul Berry and Mr David Burrows of Portadown Orange district, who said that there would be no compromise on the Drumcree issue.
