Paris, Dakar - Senegal's opposition leader, Mr Abdoulaye Wade, speaking on French television, said he believed he had won Senegal's presidential election which took place yesterday.

Mr Wade was well ahead in the run-off vote for the presidency according to early results, a source close to the interior ministry said. According to the results from 700 key polling stations out of a total of 8,442 nationwide, Mr Wade had won close to 65 per cent of the votes, the source said. Such a head start would be difficult for his rival, President Abdou Diouf, to make up.
