A 23-year-old man was killed and two others, including a boy aged 14, were injured in shootings in Manchester overnight, police said today.

The man was shot in the Chorlton on Medlock district of central Manchester, close to the city's university, at around midnight. He died soon afterwards in hospital.

A 33-year-old man was shot in the same street and was taken to hospital. The teenager was attacked in nearby Hulme Park.

"Armed and unarmed officers are in the area to calm the situation and provide community reassurance," a Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman said.

She gave no more details of the shootings. Detectives appealed for witnesses.
