The most senior Irish official in the European Commission, Mr David O'Sullivan, has been tipped to head the cabinet of the Commission President-designate, Mr Romano Prodi.
The job is one of the key posts in the Brussels hierarchy, with enormous influence over policy implementation. Mr Prodi has said he intends to appoint a non-Italian, to break the tradition of appointing cabinets dominated by nationals of commissioners.
