A national Newborn Screening week was launched yesterday by the Minister of State for Health, Mr Brian O'Shea, at Temple Street Children's Hospital, Dublin. Since 1966, 7.3 million tests have been conducted on newborn babies for phenylketonuria, a metabolic condition which leads to retardation. About 830 infants tested positive.
