Martin O'Neill today reminded the Celtic board that he needs backing in the transfer market if they are to enjoy more "unforgettable" European nights at Parkhead.

The ambitious manager wasted no time after last night's dramatic UEFA Cup exit to Valencia in telling the directors what is required if they are to stay in Europe beyond Christmas for the first time in over 20 years.

"The days of a provincial football club like Nottingham Forest - that I was proud to be involved with after winning successive European Cups - are few and far between because the game's changed," said O'Neill.

"Money itself does not buy success and people have thrown loads at it and still not come up with a trophy.

"But if you have the money you've got a better chance. I think it wouldn't have been very difficult if you had Stg£100million to spend to think that (Luis) Figo and (Zinedine) Zidane might actually improve your team on a Saturday to Saturday basis.

"I wouldn't knock the door down, but I think the situation's quite obvious.

"We have got a great taste of it now, and the players have been fantastic in giving it to us. The crowd have also been great and have made a big impact.

"And there's no doubt that Valencia came here incredibly concerned indeed about both playing us and dealing with the crowd.

"Nights like that are unforgettable and if you want more of them sometimes the best thing to do is try to improve the team which we will try to do."
