A 41-year-old Antrim woman died after falling from a hotel balcony while on holiday with her family in Malta, it emerged today.

Mrs Linda Hampton was exercising on the third floor of the hotel when the tragedy occurred on Friday, Maltese newspapers said.

The mother of three had only been released from hospital earlier that day after suffering an epileptic fit.

Mrs Hampton, of Ashbourne Park, Lisburn, Co Antrim, had been on holiday with her husband Brian, two of her children, aged 11 and 14, and her parents, Alex and Margaret Williams.

Soon after arriving on the island, she suffered an attack and was taken to St Luke's hospital in Guardamangia, where she was detained for six days, hospital sources said.

On the evening of her release, she suffered another epileptic fit on the balcony of the San Anton hotel and fell over the railing to her death, a police spokesman said.

She was pronounced dead on Friday by Dr Adrian Vella.

The result of the autopsy is not yet known.

The British Foreign Office said they were aware of the case and were trying to confirm all the details.
