With the exception of some small newsagents, all shops, businesses, restaurants and pubs remained closed during the day. Most hotels were open for residents only. A number of pubs were due to open in the evening.

The Air Corps search and rescue crew, currently based at Strandhill Airport, assembled at their helicopter at 11 a.m. to observe the three minutes' silence.

A special memorial Mass in St Mary's Cathedral in Sligo was celebrated by the Bishop, Dr Christy Jones. Crowds packed into the church and many more stood outside throughout the service.

A multi-denominational service was also held at Sligo General Hospital and Masses were celebrated in practically every church throughout the county yesterday evening. Some 6,000 people attended a memorial Mass in Knock yesterday morning.
