Famine-ravaged North Korea has begun nation-wide celebrations to commemorate the 90th birthday of its late founding father, Kim Il-Sung, state media said today.
Art performances by workers and their families began last week to mark this tomorrow’s anniversary, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said.
The news agency said the nation's capital, Pyongyang, was alive with political, cultural and sports events.
Despite the nation's prolonged famine and poverty that has forced millions to rely on foreign food aid, the country has prepared an extravagant festival for the anniversary.
Foreign tourists have also been invited to the two-month Arirang Festival to start on April 29th.
KCNA said the festival, coupled with a daily display of gymnastics involving 100,000 people, would attract 90 organisations from at least 60 countries.
