There are almost 550 people on the sex offenders’ register in Northern Ireland, according to a new report published today.
The first report of the Northern Ireland Sex Offender Strategic Management Committee revealed that out of the 544 sex offenders registered, 48 were considered high risk, and more than half (300) medium risk.
The committee is made up of British government officials; police, prison and health service members; and people drawn from agencies supporting the victims.
In 2004-2005, 1,686 sexual offences were recorded, including 347 reported rapes. There were 1,780 offences and 354 rapes recorded in the previous year.

The report found that the number of registered offenders for 100,000 people in Northern Ireland stood at 46.
