A female police officer was injured in Northern Ireland today after she was struck by a brick while dealing with a disturbance in Newtownabbey, Co Antrim.

Neighbourhood officers were attending the scene of reports of youths causing annoyance in the Glenabbey Drivearea at around 4pm. When they arrived a number of youths fled the scene. The female officer was injured when a brick, thrown from a viaduct in the area, struck her on the back of the head.

The police officer’s injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Area commander, chief inspector Paula Hillman called for the continued support of the community in tackling anti-social behaviour in the area and appealed for those with any information to contact the PSNI.
