Police in Northern Ireland today launched an urgent appeal for help in identifying a murder victim found in Belfast.

Six people have been arrested for questioning about the killing of the man who was found at a house in the city's main student district on Wednesday.

The body was discovered by a contractor when he arrived to carry out repair work at the property at Penrose Street in the Holyland.

The victim had suffered extensive facial injuries which police said was making it difficult to make a positive ID.

Detectives believe the man may be Scottish or a foreign national and they issued a computerised image of him in the hope someone may recognise him. Police stressed it was only an artist's impression.

Europol and community representatives of Eastern European national associations have been consulted.

He was aged approximately 40 to 50, about 5'5" tall, with thin build, sandy coloured hair and blue eyes. He wore dentures.

The man had two tattoos, one on his right upper arm reading UTE WETTIG, which police said could be the name of a female. He also had a scar or tattoo on the lower part of his right arm that had faded and was illegible.

The body also had a scar on the left side of the neck which may be the result of an operation and it is possible the victim wore glasses.

Police believe the man may have been sleeping rough or spending time in the company of other homeless people in Belfast city centre.

He said it was possible the man was missing from a hostel or sheltered accommodation and he appealed for any such accommodation organisation to make contact if the description matched anyone they had not seen since Tuesday.

The deceased was believed to have been in Belfast city centre in the company of a number of other men on Wednesday.
