The former university professor, who leads the Women's Coalition, was edged out in the final round of voting in South Belfast.

Having been uncomfortably placed between the DUP and Sinn Féin in the old Assembly seating arrangements, she at last fell victim to the big party "squeeze".

She was not present to hear the result announced - having begun a tour of the TV studios. Successful SDLP candidate Ms Carmel Hanna spoke of her "regret" that her friend had gone.
