Northern Ireland Culture Minister Mr Michael McGimpsey was today accused of misleading the Assembly over meetings with the Ulster Scots language groups.

The DUP's Mr Maurice Morrow challenged the minister over his claims in an Assembly answer that his department had met the Ulster Scots lobby on five occasions.

Mr Morrow said his department's permanent secretary had confirmed in writing that no meetings had taken place with the Ulster Scots Language Society.

"Among the five meetings that she identified there was not even one about language policy.

"Two of the meetings included in her list were actually with the Apprentice Boys of Derry.

"Will the minister acknowledge in his answer that he misled the Assembly on that occasion," he added.

But Mr McGimpsey said that meetings had taken place between the department and the Ulster Scots Agency.

"I had a meeting in my department around the end of June with the Ulster Scots Agency. "It is certainly on the record that there have been meetings and a very large body of correspondence."

DUP leader Dr Ian Paisley said there was a clear divergence in the accounts of the minister and his permanent secretary.

"There must be some way whereby we can know where the truth lies," he added.
