A STUDENT publication from Trinity College Dublin last night won the newspaper of the year award for the fifth year running.
Student journalists from TCD won eight of 32 prizes presented at the Oxygen.ie National Student Media Awards (Smedias) in the Mansion House, Dublin.
The University Times received the newspaper of the year award for the second year in a row. The award is based on the quality of journalism, editorial standards and overall professionalism .
The University Times editor, Tom Lowe, was named as journalist of the year. Aoife Crowley, editor of campus rival the Trinity News received the editor of the year award.
The Trinity News was also recognised for having the best layout and design and won an award for best magazine. Karl McDonald of the Trinity News was named as arts feature writer of the year.
Website of the year was among the five prizes given to students at Dublin City University. Denis McEvoy and Alan Regan were given the award for the campus radio station website Dcufm.com.
DCU student Cormac O’Brien won the journalist of the year award in the national media category for an article published in GCN magazine. The winners saw off competition from over 1,500 entries and were drawn from more than 10 colleges and universities.
Among the judges were Irish Times chief reporter Carl O’Brien, Evening Herald deputy editor Ian Mallon and RTÉ Drivetime presenter Mary Wilson.
