New school for Dublin's inner city

A NEW 600 pupil school for Dublin's north inner city will enrol its first pupils in September 1998

A NEW 600 pupil school for Dublin's north inner city will enrol its first pupils in September 1998. The new community college will be located in Sean McDermott Street.

The school is part of the measures announced by the Minister for Education, Ms Breathnach, designed to counter educational disadvantage. These include a pilot scheme for teacher counsellors for schools in disadvantaged areas and an anti drugs programme.

The new school will replace the existing facilities at Parnell Square and North Strand and wills provide a six year second level programme.

Under the counsellors' scheme, 27 teachers will be allocated to 31 selected primary schools to provide support in managing the behaviour of disruptive or disturbed pupils. Seven of the posts have been allocated to meet the needs of 11 primary schools in Dublin's north inner city.
