Iarnrod Eireann is to open a new railway station at Monasterevin, Co Kildare, at a cost of £2.5 million.
The town, which currently has a population of more than 5,000, has not been served by trains since the old station closed in 1976, according to the rail company.
Four services in each direction will serve the station initially with scope for expansion at a later date. Two of the peak-time trains at each end of the day will be Arrow services, while the other two will be Intercity trains, a spokesman said.
Iarnrod Eireann said the Monasterevin station would be "fully accessible" to people with restricted mobility.
Some 50 car parking spaces will also be provided. Further investment of £200 million will increase track capacity between Dublin and Kildare in line with increasing demand, Iarnrod Eireann said.
