LAGOS - Nigerian military authorities named a prince and businessman as the new Sultan of Sokoto, the country's highest Muslim authority, after they sacked at the weekend the previous bolder of the post, Sultan Ibrahim Dasuki (73), for suspected fraud.

The new sultan is Mr Mohammed Maccido, an official in the Sokoto state government. He was a contender for the position in November 1988 but lost to Mr Dasuki when military authorities overturned an election Mr Maccido was said to have won.
