Gardaí investigating the murder of Dublin teenager Raonaid Murray nine years ago have received new information that has been described as “very significant” following an appeal to the public on Saturday.
Ms Murray (17), from Glenageary, Dublin, was stabbed to death yards from her home. Her body was found at Silchester Crescent, Glenageary, in the early hours of September 4th, 1999.
The last definite sighting of the teenager was leaving Scotts pub in Dún Laoghaire at 11.20pm on September 3rd.
Det Insp Eamon O’Reilly of Dún Laoghaire Garda Station said gardaí had received a number of calls over the last few days after their appeal to the public for information and that “new names are coming up”.
“Items of information that have never been disclosed before have emerged as a result of the calls,” said Det Insp O’Reilly after a "for mention" hearing of the inquest into Ms Murray’s death at Dublin County Coroner’s Court today.
"It’s very significant and we’re delighted with the response," he added.
He had earlier applied for an adjournment of the inquest into Raonaid’s death under Section 25.1 of the Coroner’s Act 1962. He told the Dublin County Coroner, Dr Kieran Geraghty, that a criminal murder inquiry is still ongoing.
The coroner Dr Kieran Geraghty granted the application and adjourned the inquest until a date in July 2009 for further mention.
