New church for Mountjoy prison

A new Church of Ireland church in Mountjoy Prison has been dedicated by the Archbishop of Dublin, Most Rev Walton Empey

A new Church of Ireland church in Mountjoy Prison has been dedicated by the Archbishop of Dublin, Most Rev Walton Empey. The church is smaller than the previous one at the prison.

The old chapel was too large for the small congregation of six to eight and the prison library needed to expand. Following agreement with the church authorities, the existing church and library swapped accommodation and the premises were refurbished.

The Church of Ireland yesterday described the new chapel as "very small and very beautiful". It can accommodate a congregation of about 30. There are about 14 Anglican prisoners in Mountjoy Prison.
