Pope Benedict has appointed Monsignor Brendan Kelly as the Bishop of Achonry.

Pope Benedict has appointed Monsignor Brendan Kelly as the Bishop of Achonry.

Mgr Kelly (61) is the parish priest of Spiddal, Co Galway, and will succeed the Rev Thomas Flynn as the Bishop of Achonry.

A date for the episcopal ordination has not yet been set, and until the new bishop takes formal possession of the diocese, Dr Flynn will continue as the apostolic administrator for the Diocese of Achonry, the Catholic press office said.

The Diocese of Achonry covers part of the counties of Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo, consisting of 47 Catholic churches and 23 parishes.

Bishop of Galway Martin Drennan congratulated Mgr Kelly and said it was an honour for the diocese.

"Congratulations and thanks also to his family and the people of his home parish of Craughwell for the gift of 'one of their own' to the church," Dr Drennan said.
