A convicted murderer in Maghaberry Prison, Co Antrim, has been granted leave to apply for a judicial review of the prison governor's decision refusing him a TV in his cell.

Christopher Sheals (30) says he is not allowed to watch communal TV because he is in solitary confinement for his own safety following threats to his life. "Not allowing me a TV set in my cell is placing me under further and unnecessary mental anguish," Sheals said in an affidavit lodged in the High Court in Belfast.

Sheals and Stephen Rules (31) are serving life for the murder of Margaret Wright, mistaken for a Catholic, she was lured to a loyalist band hall where she was tortured, beaten and shot.
