A Central Criminal Court jury was sent to a hotel last night after failing to reach a verdict in the trial of a Dublin man accused of murdering a garda.

The jury had deliberated for just over 3 1/2 hours. The central issue is whether the accused, Mr Daniel O'Toole (37), of Crumlin, Dublin, intended to kill Sgt Andrew Callanan at Tallaght Garda station on July 21st, 1999.

Mr O'Toole denies capital murder but admits manslaughter. He also denies a charge of arson. The jury will resume its deliberations to day.
