The Munster Council are scheduled to meet this evening to determine the fate of this year’s Munster football title.
Cork defeated Tipperary by an overwhelming 19 point margin in last Sunday’s Munster final but in doing so fielded six substitutes, one more than is permitted under official GAA rules.
The Council will discuss what action to take in a specially convened meeting at 9 p.m. in Adare tonight but if they stick to the letter of the law, which clearly states the penalty for such an offence is forfeiture of the match, Cork must relinquish their title.
In doing so, they would enter the qualifying series mean the Rebels, and not Tipperary, would face Mayo in the qualifying series at the weekend. Tipp would be named Munster champions and would enter the All Ireland quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, Mayo’s Kieran McDonald will return to the county fold this evening in a move that could see him play in Saturday's qualifier against either Tipperary or Cork.
The inspirational Crossmolina player ruled himself out of action this season due to work commitments. However, he will train with the rest of the panel tonight and could feature in Saturday evening’s crucial qualifier.
