ATHENS - The Greek Prime Minister, Mr Costas Simitis, held urgent meetings with his senior ministers yesterday to discuss an EU initiative for the start of a dialogue with Turkey, government officials said.

Government officials said Athens and Ankara were close in agreeing to the setting up of two committees of experts one from each side to discuss ways to tackle differences, including territorial feuds in the Aegean Sea. It is the first time the two NATO allies have considered talking since January last year when they came close to war over rights of two uninhabited islets in the eastern Aegean Sea.
