Thousands of mourning Palestinians have marched in funeral processions in the Gaza Strip for 11 Palestinians killed in Israeli helicopter strikes over the past two days.

Masked gunmen from different Palestinian factions fired their rifles into the air and vowed to pursue the fight against Israel following the missile attacks on Wednesday that killed four Hamas militants and seven bystanders.

Hamas said it carried out Wednesday's Jerusalem bus bombing to avenge Israel's attempted assassination of Abdel-Aziz al-Rantissi, one of its senior leaders, in a missile strike on Tuesday. Israel has accused him of coordinating attacks on Israelis.

The violence has jeopardised a "road map" to peace promoted at a landmark summit that Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and US President George W. Bush attended in Jordan on June 4th.

Hamas, which opposes the existence of the Jewish state, has rejected both the plan and Mr Abbas's efforts to coax the group into a deal to cease attacks against Israelis in a 32-month-old Palestinian uprising for statehood.
