ATHENS - Tens of thousands of mourners packed the streets of Athens yesterday as Mr Andreas Papandreou, founder of Greek socialism, as laid to rest in a state funeral blendings solemn ceremony with an outpouring of national grief.

Mourners - fewer than expected because of the intense heat - came from all over Greece, by bus, train and boat, to pay their last respects to the former prime minister.
