Gardaí are investigating a crash in Co Westmeath yesterday in which a man (46) died.

The collision between the man's motorcycle and a car occurred at Monaghanstown, Castletowngeoghegan, at 6.40pm yesterday.

Gardaí in Mullingar this evening named the man as Kenneth Carroll from Dalystown, Mullingar.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to contact Mullingar Garda station at 044-938400.

According to most recent Garda figures, some 207 people have died on the State's roads so far this year in 190 separate collisions.

Their number includes 84 drivers, 48 pedestrians, 45 passengers, nine cyclists, 19 motorcyclists and two motorcycle pillion passengers.

The number of people killed on the roads is down somewhat on 2006. At the same time last year, 248 people had died.
