A STANDOFF between morticians and the County council at Kerry General Hospital has been suspended, following the intervention of the south Kerry coroner.
Since early this week, the morticians had refused to carry out postmortems because of a row over deductions from their salaries.
On Wednesday, it emerged that morticians at Cork University Hospital had refused, in solidarity with their Kerry colleagues, to accept a body awaiting postmortem.
Yesterday, coroner Terence Casey said he had arranged a meeting between the Revenue and the morticians and the morticians had agreed to suspend their strike.
The morticians who are employed by the HSE ordinarily and by the county council when carrying out postmortems say they are paying double deductions. The council says it believes it is acting in accordance with taxation law.
