Morocco says it captured the alleged mastermind of the suicide bombings in Casablanca this month but that he died in custody.

The State prosecutor last night identified the man by a first name only, Abdelhaq, and said he had died from chronic heart and liver disease.

The prosecutor said Abdelhaq had also used the alias "Moul Sebbat" (The man with the shoes).

Abdelhaq was arrested in the central city of Fes on Monday, 10 days after the suicide bomb attacks on five central Casablanca locations, the prosecutor said. The attacks killed 31 people as well as the 12 suicide bombers.

Under interrogation in Fes, Abdelhaq "admitted he was the main coordinator" of the May 16th bombings, Mr Belghiti said.

Three men charged on Monday in connection with the attacks had also identified him as their commander, the prosecutor added.

"His state of health unfortunately did not allow the investigators to complete all the elements of the inquiry," the official said.
