A BRONZE head commemorating South African President Mr Nelson Mandela, originally believed to have been stolen from Merrion Square, Dublin, last weekend, was found under a bush in the park yesterday afternoon.

The statue, which is over two feet high and weighs five stone, was removed by vandals, despite being secured by three bolts to its four-foot plinth in Archbishop Ryan Park.

A plaque commemorating Mr Willie Bermingham, the founder of ALONE, which was also removed from its base, was found elsewhere in the park.

Gardai were yesterday searching for a third monument missing from its plinth in the park.

The statue of the writer George Russell, known by the initials AE, appears to have been removed over the weekend.
