Mink-rearing conditions defended

The housing conditions for the rearing of mink were defended by Minister of State for Agriculture Brendan Smith.

He said they had evolved through research and practical experience over many generations of animals on farms.

"Mink are generally housed in sheds four metres wide," said Mr Smith.

"These sheds are naturally aerated and open-sided with roofing panels. They provide normal temperature and light conditions, while protecting against direct sunlight, wind and rain."

Mr Smith said that wire cages were placed in rows in the sheds. "The cages are raised off the ground to ensure good hygiene." The diet fed to these mink was high in nutrients and might have added mineral and vitamin supplements to ensure ideal nutrition levels.

Mr Smith was speaking during the resumed debate on a Green Party Private Member's Bill calling for an end to fur farming.

Paul Gogarty (Green Party, Dublin Mid-West) urged the House to take a courageous moral stand rather considering the economic issue.

The Government defeated the Bill by 67 votes to 50.
