The Government should reduce the minimum wage by more than 10 per cent to protect jobs in the hospitality sector, the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise and Employment has heard.
Chief executive of the Restaurants Association Adrian Cummins said 80 per cent of restaurants were operating at a loss and one-third faced closure. He said Irish restaurants paid catering staff the highest rates in Europe.
