Lawyers for indicted war criminal Mr Slobodan Milosevic arrived in The Hague today ahead of theformer Yugoslav president's first appearance before the UN warcrimes tribunal, a tribunal spokesman said.

Belgrade lawyers Mr Zdenko Tomanovic and Mr Dragan Krgovic met withthe clerk of the International Criminal Tribunal for the formerYugoslavia (ICTY) and were to head later to the tribunal's detentionfacility to meet with Milosevic, the spokesman said.

Mr Tomanovic said as he left Belgrade for The Hague early this morning he would meet with Mr Milosevic to "set up details ahead of hisfirst hearing."

He added: "I do not know on what the defence would be based on.We will see after meeting him.''

Mr Tomanovic was a member of Milosevic's defense team in Belgrade,where the ex-president was facing domestic charges of abuse of powerand corruption before his dramatic extradition to The Hague lastweek.

The Serb nationalist, who becomes the first former head of stateto be prosecuted by an international court and faces lifeimprisonment if convicted, does not recognize the ICTY.
