The former army major convicted of cheating to win the "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" TV quiz jackpot was given a two-year conditional discharge today over an unrelated insurance fraud.

The sentence meant Charles Ingram walked free but could be jailed if he commits any more offences in the next two years.

Ingram had claimed 30,000 pounds from insurance firm Direct Line after a burglary at his home in 2001 but had failed to declare previous claims when applying for the policy.

Ingram was convicted on two charges of deception over a house contents insurance policy. The jury cleared Ingram of five other charges.
